What "address on Tether's blacklist" means, and whether frozen USDT can be recovered

The issuer of USDT can block tokens on any address. This can be checked directly in the contract, which is exactly what the service does.

How the freeze works

USDT is a centralised token. Its smart contract keeps a blacklist of addresses: tokens on those addresses cannot be transferred. Tether adds addresses at the request of law enforcement, in connection with sanctions, or after its own investigations. There is no public register of reasons; only the fact of the block in the contract.

How the service checks it

When building a snapshot, the service queries the USDT contract on TRON and checks whether the address is blacklisted. This is a direct on-chain check, not a third-party database. A report may be cached for up to 5 minutes.

Why it matters before you send

  • If the recipient's address is frozen, USDT sent to it is blocked too: you cannot get it back and the recipient cannot use it.
  • Frozen wallets among the counterparties signal a risky environment, even if the address itself is still clean.
  • A freeze is one of the heaviest flags in the score: it weighs 90 out of 100.

Can it be unfrozen

Only Tether decides. The owner has to approach the issuer with documents proving the funds are legitimate; the service plays no part in this and gives no advice on unfreezing. Anyone offering to "recover frozen USDT for a fee" is very likely a scammer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my address is frozen?

Paste the address on the home page. The report has a separate "Freeze" finding if the address is on the USDT contract's blacklist.

Does the freeze affect all coins on the address?

No, only USDT. TRX and other tokens on the same address are not affected.

If the address was unfrozen, will the report show it?

Yes, on a new check. A re-check bypasses the cache after a minimum interval of 20 seconds.
